Dentures are removable appliances designed to replace missing teeth and restore oral functionality and appearance. They are custom-made to fit a person’s mouth and can be used to replace some or all of their natural teeth. Dentures are typically made of a combination of materials, including acrylic resin, metal frameworks, and artificial teeth.
There are two main types of dentures:
- Complete Dentures: These are used when all of the natural teeth are missing. Complete dentures consist of a flesh-colored acrylic base that covers the gums and a full set of artificial teeth. They are held in place by suction or with the help of denture adhesives.
- Partial Dentures: Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a metal or plastic framework that matches the color of the gums. Partial dentures are secured in place using clasps that grip onto the remaining natural teeth.
Getting dentures typically involves multiple visits to a dentist or prosthodontist. The process includes taking impressions of the mouth, creating models, and fitting the dentures to ensure a comfortable and functional fit. Adjustments may be necessary to achieve the best fit and bite.
Dentures can greatly improve chewing and speaking abilities for individuals with missing teeth, and they also help support the facial muscles, preventing the sagging of facial tissues that can occur when teeth are lost. It’s important to properly clean and care for dentures to maintain oral hygiene and extend their lifespan. Regular dental check-ups are recommended to ensure the dentures fit well and to address any issues that may arise.
