Dental checkups
How do I book a checkup?
You can book online anytime or give us a call. New patients receive a $200 in-office credit toward their first visit.
What is an oral cancer screening?
A quick, painless visual exam of the mouth, throat, and surrounding tissues. It takes just a few minutes and is included in every routine checkup at no extra charge.
Can I get a cleaning if my gums bleed?
Yes. Bleeding gums are often a sign of inflammation or early gum disease, which is exactly what we're looking for during a checkup. Don't let it keep you from coming in.
What if I don't have insurance?
Our Healthy Smiles membership plan covers preventive care for one simple yearly fee with no deductibles or waiting periods. Ask us about it when you call.
Do you accept dental insurance for checkups?
Yes. We accept most major plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Delta Dental, MetLife, and United Concordia. Preventive care like cleanings and exams is often covered at 100% under most plans.
At what age should my child have their first dental visit?
By age one or within six months of their first tooth. Early visits help establish healthy habits and let us catch any developmental concerns early.
Does a cleaning hurt?
For most patients, a cleaning is quick and comfortable. If your gums are sensitive or it's been a while since your last visit, there may be some minor discomfort. Let us know and we'll adjust accordingly.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in a few years?
You're not alone, and you won't be judged here. We'll start fresh, do a thorough exam, and build a plan from where you are now.
Do I need X-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily. How often you need X-rays depends on your age, dental history, and risk factors. We'll only recommend them when there's a clinical reason to do so.
How long does a routine dental checkup take?
Most checkups take about 60 minutes. If it's your first visit, plan for a little extra time for paperwork, X-rays, and a thorough exam.
Same-day crowns
How do I know if I need a crown?
The best way to find out is to come in for an exam. Signs that a crown may be needed include tooth pain, visible cracking, a large filling that is failing, or a tooth that has had a root canal. We'll take a look and give you a straightforward recommendation.
Are same-day crowns as strong as traditional crowns?
Yes. CEREC crowns are milled from high-strength dental porcelain and are designed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces. They are comparable in durability to lab-fabricated crowns.
What if my crown doesn't feel right after my visit?
Call us. Minor bite adjustments are quick and easy to take care of. We'd rather you come back than put up with any discomfort.
Is a CEREC crown covered by insurance?
Many dental insurance plans cover crowns, though coverage varies by plan. We'll verify your benefits before your appointment and give you a clear cost estimate upfront.
How do I care for my crown after placement?
Brush and floss as normal, including around the crown. Avoid chewing very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours after placement.
Can a same-day crown be used for front teeth?
Yes. CEREC crowns work well for both front and back teeth and are designed to blend naturally with your smile.
Will my crown look like a natural tooth?
Yes. CEREC crowns are made from porcelain that is color-matched to your surrounding teeth. Most patients find them indistinguishable from natural teeth.
How is a CEREC crown different from a traditional crown?
A traditional crown requires two appointments and is made at an outside lab. A CEREC crown is designed and milled in our office during a single visit. Both produce durable, natural-looking results.
Does getting a crown hurt?
We numb the area before preparing your tooth, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Some mild sensitivity around the tooth is normal for a few days after placement.
How long does a same-day crown appointment take?
Most same-day crown appointments take between 90 minutes and two hours from start to finish.
Emergency dentistry
How do I avoid dental emergencies?
Regular checkups are the best prevention. They let us catch small problems before they become urgent ones. Wearing a mouthguard during contact sports and a night guard if you grind your teeth also helps reduce your risk.
Do you offer sedation for emergency visits?
Yes. Laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation are all available. Let us know when you call and we'll have everything ready for your visit.
Will I need a follow-up appointment after my emergency visit?
Sometimes. If the emergency required a temporary fix or the situation was complex, we'll schedule a follow-up to complete treatment. We'll make sure you leave with a clear plan.
Can a dental emergency cause other health problems?
Yes. Untreated dental infections can spread to the jaw, neck, and other areas of the body. If you have swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing alongside tooth pain, seek care immediately.
Do you treat emergency patients who are not existing patients?
Yes. You don't need to be an existing patient to be seen for an emergency. New patients are always welcome.
What should I do if I can't reach you?
If you're experiencing a life-threatening emergency such as difficulty breathing or swallowing due to swelling, go to the nearest emergency room immediately. For non-life-threatening situations, leave us a message and we'll get back to you as quickly as possible.
Is an emergency visit more expensive than a regular appointment?
Emergency visit fees vary depending on what treatment is needed. We'll give you a clear cost estimate before anything starts and work with your insurance or discuss financing options if needed.
What if my pain goes away on its own?
Don't ignore it. Pain that comes and goes is often a sign of an underlying problem that will come back, usually worse. Come in so we can find out what's causing it.
Can you really see me the same day?
We do our best. We hold time in our daily schedule specifically for emergency patients. The earlier you call, the better your chances of being seen that day.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Any situation involving severe pain, swelling, bleeding, a knocked-out or broken tooth, or signs of infection should be treated as an emergency. When in doubt, call us and we'll help you figure out next steps.
Wisdom teeth & extractions
Is sedation available for wisdom tooth removal?
Yes. Laughing gas, oral sedation, IV sedation, and hospital-based general anesthesia are all available. We'll help you choose the right level of support based on the complexity of your case and your comfort level.
What are my options for replacing an extracted tooth?
We offer dental implants, dentures, and other restorative solutions. If you need a tooth replaced, we'll talk through your options and help you choose the right fit for your goals and budget.
Will I need a bone graft after my extraction?
If you plan to replace the tooth with a dental implant, a bone graft may be recommended to preserve the socket. We'll let you know at your consultation if this applies to your case.
How many teeth can be extracted in one visit?
That depends on your individual situation and the complexity of the extractions. We'll discuss what's appropriate at your consultation.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Not always. Some wisdom teeth come in properly and cause no issues. We monitor them with regular X-rays and only recommend removal if they are impacted, causing pain, or posing a risk to surrounding teeth.
What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged before healing is complete. To avoid it, don't use a straw, spit forcefully, or smoke for at least 72 hours after your procedure.
Can I eat before my extraction appointment?
If you're having laughing gas or local anesthesia only, you can eat normally beforehand. If you're having IV sedation or oral sedation, we'll give you specific fasting instructions ahead of your appointment.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients feel back to normal within two to three days after a simple extraction. Wisdom tooth removal may take three to five days. Swelling and mild soreness are normal during this time.
Does a tooth extraction hurt?
The area is fully numbed before we begin, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some pressure and movement is normal. Most patients are surprised by how manageable it is.
How do I know if I need a tooth extracted?
The best way to find out is to come in for an exam. We'll take X-rays, assess the tooth, and give you a straightforward recommendation. We only suggest extraction when it's truly the best option.
Clear aligners
How much do clear aligners cost and does insurance cover them?
Cost varies depending on the complexity and length of your treatment. Some dental insurance plans include orthodontic coverage that applies to clear aligners. We'll verify your benefits and go over financing options at your consultation so you have a clear picture before committing.
Will I need a retainer after treatment?
Yes. After your teeth reach their final position, a retainer is essential to keep them there. We'll provide retainer instructions at the end of your treatment.
How do I clean my aligners?
Rinse them with lukewarm water whenever you remove them. Use a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap to clean them daily. Avoid hot water, colored soaps, or toothpaste, which can scratch or discolor the trays.
Can I drink coffee or tea with my aligners in?
It's best to remove your aligners before drinking anything other than plain water. Hot or dark-colored beverages can warp the plastic or cause staining.
What happens if I lose or damage a tray?
Contact us as soon as possible. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we'll advise you to move to the next tray or order a replacement. Try not to go too long without wearing an aligner, as your teeth can shift back.
Can teenagers use clear aligners?
Yes. Clear aligners are suitable for most teens. We'll evaluate your teen's teeth and jaw development at their consultation to confirm they're a good candidate.
Are clear aligners painful?
Most patients experience mild pressure or discomfort for the first day or two after switching to a new tray. This is a sign that the aligners are working. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help if needed.
Will clear aligners affect how I speak?
Most patients adjust within a few days. There may be a slight change to your speech when you first start wearing aligners, but it typically resolves quickly as you get used to the trays.
How many hours a day do I need to wear my aligners?
For treatment to progress on schedule, aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours per day. They should only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, and brushing or flossing.
How is clear aligner treatment different from traditional braces?
Clear aligners use a series of removable plastic trays to gradually move teeth, while traditional braces use fixed metal brackets and wires. Aligners are virtually invisible, removable, and generally more comfortable than braces. They are best suited for mild to moderate alignment issues.
Dental implants
How do I care for my implant?
Brush and floss around it as you would a natural tooth and keep up with regular checkups. No special care routine is required.
What is the success rate?
Over 95% in healthy patients. Bone density, overall health, and following post-op instructions are the biggest factors in long-term success.
Does insurance cover implants?
Coverage varies by plan. We'll verify your benefits before your consultation and go over financing options for any remaining balance.
Is sedation available?
Yes. Laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation are all available. Let us know at your consultation and we'll have the right option ready.
How is an implant different from a bridge?
A bridge anchors to adjacent teeth, which must be filed down to support it. An implant stands independently, preserves jawbone, and doesn't affect neighboring teeth.
What if I've had a missing tooth for years?
Bone loss over time may mean a graft is needed first, but many patients in this situation are still good candidates. A scan will tell us exactly what we're working with.
How long do implants last?
The post can last a lifetime with proper care. The crown typically lasts 15 to 25 years before normal wear may require replacement.
Does implant surgery hurt?
The area is fully numbed before we begin. Some soreness and swelling in the days after is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long does the full process take?
Three to nine months from placement to final crown, depending on whether bone grafting is needed and how quickly you heal.
Can smokers get implants?
Smoking significantly increases the risk of failure by interfering with healing. We strongly recommend stopping before and during the healing process.
Dentures
How soon after losing teeth can I get dentures?
It depends on the situation. Immediate dentures can be placed the same day as extraction. For a final denture, we typically wait for the gum tissue to fully heal, which takes a few months. We'll walk you through the timing at your consultation.
My dentures no longer fit well. What should I do?
Come in for an adjustment. Dentures that don't fit properly can cause sore spots, difficulty eating, and further bone loss. Relining or refitting can often restore a comfortable fit without the need for a full replacement.
What is the difference between traditional and digital dentures?
Traditional dentures are made from physical impressions and manual fabrication. Digital dentures use 3D scanning and computer-aided design for a more precise fit and consistent results. Digital records also make replacement straightforward if the denture is ever lost or damaged.
Are dentures covered by insurance?
Many plans cover a portion of denture costs. Coverage varies depending on your plan and whether you've met your deductible. We'll verify your benefits before your consultation and go over financing options for any remaining balance.
Will I be without teeth during the process?
In most cases, no. We can place immediate dentures the same day as an extraction so you always have something in place. Your final denture is typically ready within a few weeks.
How do I clean my dentures?
Remove and rinse them after eating. Brush them daily with a soft denture brush and mild soap, not regular toothpaste, which can be too abrasive. Soak them overnight in water or a denture solution to keep them from drying out.
Can I sleep with my dentures in?
We generally recommend removing dentures at night to give your gum tissue time to rest and to prevent accelerated bone loss. We'll give you specific guidance based on your situation.
Do dentures feel like real teeth?
Modern dentures are designed to look and feel as natural as possible, but there is an adjustment period. Most patients adapt fully within a few weeks and find that well-fitted dentures don't interfere significantly with daily life.
How long do dentures last?
Most dentures last five to ten years with proper care before they need to be relined or replaced. Changes in your jawbone over time can affect the fit, which is why regular checkups are important.
Veneers
What is the difference between the veneer materials you offer?
We offer traditional feldspathic porcelain and high-strength lithium disilicate ceramic. Both are natural-looking and durable. Lithium disilicate is stronger and better suited for patients who grind their teeth or need added durability. Traditional porcelain offers exceptional aesthetics for patients whose primary goal is appearance. We'll recommend the right material based on your teeth and goals at your consultation.
Are veneers covered by insurance?
Veneers are a cosmetic procedure and are generally not covered by dental insurance. Financing through CareCredit, Sunbit, and MACU is available to help manage the cost.
How do I care for my veneers?
Brush and floss as normal. Use a non-abrasive toothpaste and avoid biting down on hard objects. A night guard is recommended if you grind your teeth, as grinding can chip or crack porcelain over time.
Can veneers fix crooked teeth?
Veneers can improve the appearance of mildly uneven teeth, but they're not a substitute for orthodontic treatment. If the misalignment is significant, we may recommend clear aligners first.
How many veneers do I need?
That depends on your goals. Some patients veneer a single tooth to match a chipped one. Others veneer six to ten teeth for a full smile makeover. We'll make a recommendation at your consultation based on what you're hoping to achieve.
Can I whiten my veneers?
Porcelain veneers do not respond to whitening treatments. If you're considering whitening, it's best to do so before your veneers are placed so we can match the porcelain to your desired shade.
Does getting veneers hurt?
The preparation appointment involves removing a small layer of enamel, which is done under local anesthesia. Some sensitivity in the days following is normal and temporary.
Are veneers permanent?
The process is permanent because a small amount of enamel is removed to place them. Once that enamel is removed, the tooth will always need to be covered. This is something we discuss thoroughly at your consultation before moving forward.
Do veneers look natural?
Yes. Porcelain closely mimics the translucency of natural enamel and is color-matched to complement your surrounding teeth. Most people cannot tell the difference between veneers and natural teeth.
How long do veneers last?
With proper care, porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 20 years. Avoiding habits like nail biting, chewing ice, and using your teeth as tools will help extend their lifespan.
Teeth whitening
How do I book a whitening appointment?
Book online or give us a call. New patients receive a $200 in-office credit that can be applied toward their first visit, which can include whitening as part of the initial exam and cleaning package.
Will whitening work on tetracycline stains?
Tetracycline staining is one of the most difficult types to treat and often does not respond well to whitening alone. In those cases, veneers tend to be a more reliable solution. We'll be upfront about what whitening can and can't do for your specific situation.
How is in-office whitening different from take-home trays?
In-office whitening uses a higher-concentration gel applied under clinical supervision for faster, more dramatic results. Take-home trays use a lower-concentration gel worn over several days or weeks. Both work, but in-office treatment delivers more immediate results. We can recommend the right approach based on your goals and timeline.
Can pregnant or nursing patients whiten their teeth?
We recommend waiting until after pregnancy and nursing to undergo whitening treatment. While there is no definitive evidence of harm, it's a precaution we take seriously.
How soon after whitening can I eat and drink normally?
We recommend avoiding dark-colored foods and drinks for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. This includes coffee, tea, red wine, and anything with strong pigmentation. Your teeth are more porous immediately after whitening and more susceptible to restaining during that window.
Can I whiten if I have crowns, veneers, or fillings?
Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel. Existing restorations will not change color, which can result in mismatched shading if they're visible when you smile. We'll evaluate this at your consultation and give you an honest assessment.
Is whitening safe for my enamel?
Yes, when done professionally. We use a controlled application process that protects your enamel and gum tissue. Over-whitening or misuse of store-bought products is more likely to cause sensitivity or damage.
Does teeth whitening hurt?
Some patients experience mild sensitivity during or after treatment, particularly to cold temperatures. It typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Let us know before your appointment if you already have sensitive teeth and we'll take that into account.
How long do whitening results last?
With good habits, results typically last one to three years. Avoiding heavy staining foods and drinks, brushing regularly, and doing occasional touch-ups can extend that significantly.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Results vary depending on the starting shade of your teeth and the type of staining present. Most patients see a noticeable difference of several shades after a single in-office treatment.
